Evangeline Police Jury Monday Considers Granting Enterprise Zones

      The Evangeline Parish Police Jury, Monday, heard a report from Dr. William “Tojo” Ward and Rebecca Shirley of the Acadiana Economic Development District. Ward also serves as chairman of the local Parish Industrial Development Board. Shirley and Ward suggested  the jury  consider offering ”enterprise zones” in the parish. Enterprise zones assist existing businesses and new businesses in low income areas of the parish by  receiving  tax credits from the state for hiring workers. The jury voted to postpone any action until their next meeting in November.

    In other business, the police jury approved a request from Cameron officials to beef up security measures around their facility. Bart Latour representing Cameron said he is concerned about  plant security and the security of the 600 plus employees at the facility at the Industrial Park. Latour says Cameron is proposing to erect a fence  at the Cul-de-Sac along with a guard shack.

    In other action, the police jury:

--received news that Terry Arceneaux , the  Acadian Ambulance Service Community and Governmental Affairs Officer for this area is retiring after 40 years. He will be replaced by Paul Fuselier;

--reappointed Darrell Miller to another five year on the Te Mamou Water District Board;

--scheduled their annual all French meeting for December 10 at 2:00pm while a special meeting has been called to amend their 2013 budget and adopt their new 2014 budget for Dec. 16;

--voted to give permission to the vice president or secretary treasurer to sign a road use permit for a logging firm in the event the jury president in not available;

--after spending a considerable amount of time reviewing a new policy for road crews to track purchases as recommended by their auditors voted to table the issue.
