Rotary Club Hears From Two Guest Speakers Tuesday

    Laura Balthazar spoke to the Ville Platte Rotary Club at their noon meeting today (Tuesday. She is the executive director of the St. Landry/Evangeline Sexual Assault Center headquartered in Opelousas. The center is a non- profit organization that receives its funding from federal grants. They have one full time person and four part time people on staff. The group has 35 volunteers assisting. The center has a representative of the group visiting Evangeline Parish at the Ville Platte North Side Civic Center three days a week.

   In 2016, the center saw 147 clients with 39 referrals to the emergency room. The organization has seen victims as young as babies and seniors as old as 85 years old. She said, every 98 seconds someone becomes a victim of sexual abuse in this country. Also, one of our every four women before age 18 will become a victim of sexual abuse. Balthazar was the special guest of Rotarian Ronnie Landreneau.

   Also speaking to the Rotarians was Yvonne Johnson, a teacher at Pine Prairie High School. She said two members of the Pine Prairie Future Business Leaders of America chapter have been invited to the national convention: Cort Fuller who is the FBLA District President and Vernonica Bernal. The students are trying to raise the funding to pay for the costs of the trips.

  In other rotary club news:

--Last Saturday’s work day at Heritage Park was a big success with club members and eight Sacred Heart Interact students helping in the clean up project;

--the rotary club will be cooking BBQ sandwiches Saturday April 22 at Chicot State Park  for the Grand Hoorah Festival.
