THE EVANGELINE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS ITS BI-MONTHLY MARCH MEETING

The Evangeline Parish School Board met Wednesday night in the School Board Media Center.  Superintendent Darwan Lazard spoke of the passing of Michael Hazleton who was employed by the school system for over 19 years.  Lazard said “He will definitely be missed and we want his family to know they are in our prayers.”

Lazard and proud school Administrators introduced Beta and Junior Beta Members who have now qualified to compete in the National Beta Competition in Orlando.  Pictured are some of the students who will compete.  Others from Pine Prairie High School were not able to attend due to previous obligations.  The students from Beta include Rheagan Ortego of Basille High – 2nd state placement for Photography (Beta Sponsor Jata Crochet and Mindy Janot); Kade Chatelain – of Mamou High School 1st state placement for Technology (Sponsor Renee Gotreaux); and Darren Ramsey from Pine Prairie High School– 1st state placement for Agricultural Science (Sponsor Esther Blood).  Junior Beta members who will compete are: Ainsley Dutton, Layna Deshotel and Mayzee Lafleur from Bayou Chicot Elementary – 1st state placement Technology Team (Sponsor Aleah West) and Shaylin Soileau of Chataignier Elementary – 2nd state placement for Visual Arts.

Kelly Lafleur with the Special Education Program announced a Work-Based Learning Appreciation Luncheon being held to thank sponsors of the program.  She thanked each sponsor and said they "hope to expand the program next year.”  Those sponsors are Deville’s Grocery, Ace Hardware, Champagne’s, Evangeline Parish Library, Evangeline Parish Clerk of Court, Doug Ashy, Evangeline Parish School Board, Prairie Manor Nursing Home and the Village of Pine Prairie.

The Superintendent introduced Connie Guillory who addressed the Board and said 19 Math and Science teachers in the Parish recently applied for and received a QSM Grant through LSU.  Each was approved to receive up to $750.00 to apply to their classrooms.  These grants brought approximately $14,000.00 to the Parish.  They included 1 at Bayou Chicot, 1 at Evangeline Central, 1 at Mamou Elementary, 3 at Vidrine and 12 at Ville Platte Elementary.  The grants are only available to those who teach Math and Science.

Lazard stated he attended the Superintendents’ Conference in New Orleans at the beginning of March and said issues concerning public education in the State of Louisiana was discussed and ideas were shared.  He said he wants to keep up and stay current with all that is happening with the legislature and changes that are coming.  He stated it looks like state aid to public schools will be frozen again this year and that is worrisome because even though the money is there, costs continue to go up.

The next meeting will be on March 22, 2017.
