VILLE PLATTE ROTARY CLUB

     The Ville Platte Rotary Club today (Tuesday) heard from Bryan Leach who is charge of Delta Waterfowl from Lake Charles. He reminded Rotarians that the Delta Waterfowl banquet is set for Sept. 10 at the Ville Platte Civic Center. Delta Waterfowl has been in existence since 1911 and is the oldest waterfowl conservation program in the country.  He reported that 75 percent of the funds raised go to help protect the nesting areas of ducks in several provinces of Canada along with North Dakota and South Dakota. Leach said about 25% of the funds are spent locally in each parish for education and local conservation efforts. He said the Evangeline Parish Chapter has been putting out over 500 Wood Duck boxes. From all indications, this is expected to be a record year for the duck population because the nesting areas have been extremely wet. There are 55,000 members of the organization enrolled in the United States with 26 chapters here in Louisiana. Leach was the guest of Rotarian Dan Poret.

    In other news, the rotary club:

--welcomed its newest member, Nicole Guillory Winger;

--announced that on September 16, there will be a fellowship meeting at Dr. Jerry Veillon’s camp;

--is planning to have a board meeting to discuss its Faith House financial commitment and to launch a Face Book page;

--received news from Mayor Jennifer Vidrine that crews will be spraying for mosquito Thursday especially at both football stadiums;

--heard from Library Director Mary Foster Galosso that the Ville Platte Branch will close Sept. 4 for the move to its new location. The grand opening will take place Sept. 26;

--was reminded from Chamber Executive Director Camille Fontenot that the next Chamber of Commerce meeting is set for Wednesday at noon at Nicks on Main.
