Swamp Pop

KVPI is committed to preserving and promoting another type of music known in south Louisiana as Swamp Pop music. This unique form of South Louisiana Rock N Roll music was given the name by British music critics. One well known musician describes Swamp Pop music as one part Fais do do and one part Domino. In other words, Swamp Pop includes Cajun roots (Fais do do) and New Orleans R&B (Fats Domino). One of the earliest recordings of this type of music was by Abbeville recording artist Bobby Charles when he recorded “Later Alligator” backed up with “On Bended Knees” on Chess Records in 1955.

There is no dispute that the anthem of Swamp Pop music has to be “Mathilda” by Cookie and his Cupcakes.

Oldies 92-5 is proud to continue our tradition of supporting all of these great musical acts for the past half century. We are proud that the record producer who produced many of the classic Swamp Pop recordings through the years actually began as a DJ for KVPI: Floyd Soileau. We are proud to be in the City that has been designated by an act of the State Legislature as the Swamp Pop capitol of the World: Ville Platte.

The Boogie Kings

One of our most popular and listened-to shows is “Solid Gold Friday” where we tweak our format. We air lots of Swamp Pop music mixed in with New Orleans legends such as Fats Domino and Larry Williams and Fifties and Early 60's Hits. Through the years, we have had the opportunity of interviewing dozens of the top names in swamp pop music.

It comes down to this point. You never have to wait to hear your favorite form of Louisiana Music. If you like Cajun Music, you can hear just Cajun music during Cajun Rendezvous, and for Swamp Pop, listen to Solid Gold Friday.
