FURTHER INVESTIGATION FINDS FORMER EMPLOYEE OF EVANGELINE SHERIFF USED A CHECK SUBSTITUTION SCHEME

KVPI News has received an update to a story we brought you when Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Department employee, Bobbi Jo Fontenot, was arrested when it was discovered funds were missing from the department.  Josh Fontenot, CPA discovered the theft.

In a statement from Sheriff Eddie Soileau, he states “An employee of the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Civil Department, Bobbi Jo Fontenot, through a check substitution scheme, was failing to document and deposit checks, for the most part, from automobile repossession companies, into their proper accounts.  Rather, she was holding those checks until enough cash deposits built up and when it was time to deposit the case into the appropriate account, whether the Operating Account, Ad Valorem Tax Account or some other account, she would deposit the checks she was holding in place of the cash, then would pocket the cash.  We have determined that she stole in excess of $13,000.00.  We are confident that we have identified most, if not all, of the monies she stole in this manner.

He said “Given the recent acquisition of the services of Mike Fontenot, CPA, I am pleased with the controls he has implemented in order to deter and prevent future occurrences of employee theft.”

Fontenot turned herself in and was booked on $20,000.00 bond in May on charges of Felony Theft.  She later posted bond and was released.
