Chateau Des Amis is helping bring awareness to abuse of the elderly by sponsoring an event on Wednesday, June 14th at 9:00 a.m. in observation of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. There will be a Community Walk and a Commemorative Plaque placed in front of the rose bushes for Awareness of Elder Abuse.
According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, in the United States, experts have reported that knowledge about elder abuse lags as much as two decades behind the fields of child abuse and domestic violence.
Unfortunately, they say they simply do not know for certain how many people are suffering from elder abuse and neglect. Signs of elder abuse may be missed by professionals working with older Americans because of lack of awareness and adequate training on detecting abuse. The elderly may be reluctant to report abuse themselves because of fear of retaliation, lack of physical and/or cognitive ability to report, or because they do not want to get the abuser in trouble.
Guest speakers will be providing educational information on the many types of elder abuse and ways to prevent it. Refreshments will be served. That’s Chateau Des Amis at 955 Dardeau in Ville Platte. KVPI will be covering the event.
