Family and friends are mourning the loss of a local teen who died in an overnight crash. According to Louisiana State Police, shortly after 9:00 pm on May 1, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 363 near the St. Landry Parish / Evangeline Parish line. The crash took the life of 16-year-old Adrian N. Johnson of Washington, LA.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Johnson was traveling southbound on LA Hwy 363 in a 2006 Kia Spectra. As Johnson was driving southbound, her Kia struck a cow which was in the southbound lane of travel. After striking the cow, the Kia traveled across the northbound lane into a ditch where it then struck a culvert.
Johnson was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash, but per standard procedure a toxicology sample will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Adrian was loved by many and enjoyed more than anything hanging out with her friends and riding horses. Her mother, Carie Johnson, spoke with me after the accident and said that Adrian always loved making people smile. We will update you on funeral arrangements as they become available.
The community is mourning the loss today of Brett Fontenot who lost his life in a vehicle accident early Friday morning in Evangeline Parish. Family and close friends will hold a candlelight vigil Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the scene of the accident located at Hwy. 167 N @ Alligator Lane. A balloon release will also be held at the vigil to celebrate the life of Brett. The community is invited to attend the event. Funeral arrangements are currently being planned with Rush Funeral Home in Pine Prairie. We will let you know as soon as those arrangements are finalized.

KVPI held a contest for the little ones this year. Children had the opportunity to write a letter to Santa and bring them to the studio to put in Santa's Mailbox, or they could mail the letter in for us to send to Santa. Two excited young winners, along with their family, picked up their bikes Wednesday. Floyd Fontenot, Jr. from Mamou was presented with a new bike by Ray Matte, Owner of True Value Hardware in Mamou; and Stevie Lalonde was presented with a new bike by Josh Anderson, Store Manager of Ville Platte Walmart. Thank you to all who entered along with our sponsors. Merry Christmas!
Over forty students from Danyelle's Early Development Center visited KVPI studios today (Thursday) and recorded special Christmas wishes that were played over the radio. Merry Christmas!!
HEAUX, HEAUX, HEAUX!! Here's a chance for your child or children to write to their favorite "big guy" and tell him what they want for Christmas! I bet Santa will be returning letters to the little ones too! We will draw the two lucky winners of a brand new shiny bicycle on Monday, December 19th! Good Luck from all of the elves at KVPI.

During the month of October, KVPI worked with Faith House to express to you the importance of Domestic Violence Awareness and we are now asking for your help for those in our community who are in need of assistance due to Domestic Violence in their relationship. The Staff at Ville Platte Broadcasting will be helping to provide items for families who not only need them at Christmas time, but all year long. There are times when someone has to walk or run away from everything they know and have in order to stay safe. If you are able to, please join us in our efforts by dropping off donations of unopened shampoo & conditioner, razors, feminine products, perfume, bath products, toilet paper, deodorant, liquid laundry detergent, toys for boys & girls ages 5 -10, and gift cards in any denomination.
Most of us are very fortunate to wake up in the morning and feel safe. It is unfortunate that there are those who do not. We would like to give them one less thing to worry about. Please get your friends or your staff together and drop off donations at KVPI located at 809 W. LaSalle in Ville Platte. We thank you very much.
